Unifor presses Saskatchewan MLAs for fair bargaining and safer workplaces

REGINA, SK, Oct. 28, 2026 /CNW/ — Unifor leaders are meeting with government and Opposition MLAs in Regina this week to call for fairer labour laws and safer workplaces.

The lobby runs from Oct. 26 to 29. It focuses on three issues: fair bargaining, workplace health and safety, and how workplace deaths and serious injuries are investigated.

“Saskatchewan workers are building this province under rules that are stacked against them. When an employer can bring in scabs during a strike and investigate its own workplace deaths behind closed doors, that is unacceptable,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

Unifor is calling for an end to employer-led investigations of workplace deaths and serious injuries. Today, employers investigate incidents on their own sites and do not have to share what they find with workers, the union or the victim’s family. The union is calling for independent investigations, with findings shared openly.

“Tyrone Mcleod’s death was preventable, pure and simple,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “Weak health and safety laws cost lives. We’re not going to rest until employers like Mosaic are held accountable–not to themselves, but to a high external standard.”

Mcleod died in an incident at the Mosaic K3 potash mine in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan last December.

During the lobby week, Unifor is advocating for fair bargaining regulations, calling on the province to ban scabs during strikes and lockouts, and to make it easier for workers to join a union.

The union is also pushing for rules that better reflect today’s workplaces, including better protection for young workers, coverage for psychological harm, and regular, proactive inspections.

Unifor represents more than 10,000 workers in Saskatchewan.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
