Media advisory – Ministers Fraser and Michel to hold media availability on updates to Canada’s medical assistance in dying law
OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 23, 2026 /CNW/ — The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, will hold a media availability on updates to Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAID) law.
This follows the federal government’s earlier commitment to not move ahead with expanding MAID to people on the basis of a mental illness. The updates would also allow adults to consent in advance to receive MAID later with rigorous safeguards, following a diagnosis of an incurable illness expected to take away their ability to make this decision.
