Government of Canada issues statement marking Diwali

OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 8, 2026 /CNW/ — The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:

“Today and tomorrow, Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities across the country and around the world are marking Diwali.

Diwali is a special time to gather with family and friends, share good wishes and light up homes with diyas, small oil lamps made of clay. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali festivities feature fireworks and colourful rangoli designs.

Beyond its traditions, Diwali carries a universal message of hope. In an increasingly uncertain and divided world, this holiday reminds us that, just as light triumphs over fear, we can overcome even the darkest times when we stand united in building a more inclusive Canada, rooted in the values we all share.

To everyone celebrating Diwali, I wish you a festive, joyful celebration filled with wonderful moments.

Shubh Diwali!“
