Dawn of WarToday, new details about the upcoming real-time strategy game “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III“, the third installment of the Dawn of War series were released by Vancouver-based Relic Entertainment and it looks pretty great.

Dawn of War III, for those who don’t know, is set in the fantasy Warhammer 40K universe, a place that exists in a constant power struggle state by the many races that inhabit it. Details that were released today focused on the Eldar race, an group of psychic elf-like creatures who once ruled the universe.

The Eldar are part of three controllable races that are set to in Dawn of War III. There are the Blood Raven Space Marines, the Orks, who are viewed as mere savages by the rest of the universe, and the Eldar, who were once the undisputed sole rulers of the Warhammer 40K universe but slipped into decadence, arrogance and mutual mistrust. Think of them as the Republicans of the Warhammer universe.

“The Eldar were once the most powerful race in the galaxy -spanning over 10,000 systems. Having conquered all obstacles, they gradually fell into boredom and decadence, many began to explore darker inclinations to satisfy their ever-growing thirst for the unknown,” explains Relic Entertainment’s staff member “Kat_Re”. “Before long, mass anarchy gripped the once-grand civilization as they succumbed to these hedonistic impulses.”

What we learned about “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III” today is that playing as the Eldar in game will be very fast paced and focused around mobility, teleporting in, hitting your enemy with lightning fast speed, and getting out to restore your troops health with a passive ability that allows them to recover faster than any other units in the game. But it is now also clear that they will not be an easy race to play and perfect.

The challenges for the Eldar from the Space Marines have already been detailed by Relic. In a previous spotlight Kat_Re detailed the threat.

“The Space Marines are a powerful army that excels at facing a variety of threats. Although there are fewer units in a Space Marine army compared to their foes, their impact on the battlefield is unmatched. With high health and a wide array of specialty units to choose from, the Space Marines can turn the tides of battle with just a few squads.”

The Orks have yet to get the spotlight treatment, but hopefully they show it to us sooner rather than later. But the Warhammer Wiki gives them short shrift.

“They are seen by their enemies (pretty much everyone else in the universe) as savage, warlike, and crude, but they are the most successful species in the whole galaxy, outnumbering possibly every other intelligent race, even Mankind”

For the superfan, there is no shortage of detail on this game. The Warhammer 40K universe itself has its own Wiki with over 3,800 pages on it (that’s only 1,300~ less than the Minecraft wiki) with a seemingly never-ending plethora of in depth information about all the different races, planets, soldiers, and pretty much anything you can think of from the universe.

Founded in 1997, Relic Entertainment is the creator of the “Dawn of War”, “Homeworld”, and “Company of Heroes”, all of which are multi-part series.
