IBM Glen, an overview

IBM Glen is a notable nature preserve located in the Town of Union, in the heart of New York State’s Southern Tier. IBM Glen is located in the Town of Union, near Endicott, in Broome County, New York State. It’s part of the Southern Tier region of New York and is managed by the Waterman Conservation Education Center. The preserve offers a peaceful natural setting with trails through its mature forest and gorge, showcasing some of the oldest trees and finest natural features in the area.

The preserve spans over 200 acres and is known for its mature forest, which includes some of the oldest and largest trees in Broome County. The area is also distinguished by its cascading gorge, considered the finest in the region. The property, once a part of the former IBM Country Club, is now managed by the Waterman Conservation Center of Apalachin, NY. IBM Glen was initially part of the IBM Country Club, a recreational facility for employees of IBM (International Business Machines Corporation), a prominent multinational technology company. The land and facilities were originally developed and maintained by IBM for the benefit and use of its employees and their families. After IBM reduced its presence in the area, the property that includes IBM Glen was eventually taken over and is now managed by the Waterman Conservation Education Center, which maintains the area and ensures its preservation for educational and recreational purposes. The creation of the actual trails and the maintenance of the preserve as it is known today involve the efforts of the Waterman Center along with community volunteers and organizations dedicated to conservation and environmental education.

IBM was founded in Endicott, New York. The company was originally incorporated as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) on June 16, 1911. CTR was a consolidation of four companies, and it primarily manufactured and sold machinery ranging from commercial scales and industrial time recorders to meat and cheese slicers. It wasn’t until 1924 that CTR was renamed International Business Machines Corporation, commonly known as IBM. Endicott is often referred to as the “Birthplace of IBM,” marking its significance in the company’s early history.
