Perhaps due to a poor environment for IPOs -particularly those in tech- Houzz remains privately held. But the company would seem to be a prime candidate to IPO when the window reopens.

In 2021, in a piece entitled “Home remodeling platform Houzz hires Goldman for IPO” Reuters reported that a Houzz IPO was imminent.

“Houzz Inc, the U.S. online home remodeling platform that capitalized on the boom in renovations during the COVID-19 pandemic, has hired Goldman Sachs to prepare for an initial public offering, people familiar with the matter said,” writers Anirban Sen and Krystal Hu reported. “Houzz is aiming to go public early next year, the sources said. The Palo Alto, California-based company was last valued at about $4 billion in a private funding round led by ICONIQ Capital in 2017.”

But the reporters concluded with what was perhaps the ultimate reason that Houzz did not, in fact, IPO.

“To be sure, a Houzz IPO could face headwinds, as more people return to the office as the pandemic subsides, while soaring inflation makes remodeling more expensive,” they said.
