Cineplex Digital Solutions, the digital signage agency operating under the Cineplex Inc. banner, will hold an “experiential” open house in their new Waterloo office on October 15.
Everyone knows that Cineplex operates a chain of 163 movie theatres, with 1,643 screens, across Canada. But Cineplex Inc. is also the parent company for Cineplex Media, Cineplex Digital Solutions, Cineplex Digital Networks, CineplexStore.com and SCENE, Canada’s largest entertainment loyalty program.
Cineplex Digital Solutions specializes in digital signage and “experiential” digital displays. The company installs and develops digital signage for companies across Canada, including banks and shopping malls and public outdoor spaces.
The open house event will be hosted by Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob and Waterloo mayor Brenda Halloran.
“We don’t want to end up like the newspaper business,” said Jacob to Canadian Business, who named him “Most Innovative CEO” of 2013. “We want to continue to thrive despite the challenges ahead. It’s a business not directly dependent on movies, but it allows us to use our infrastructure to innovate. Even though we’re a large company with more than $1 billion in sales, we still see ourselves as entrepreneurial.”
A week later on October 22, Cineplex Chief Financial Officer Gord Nelson will be in New York, at the DailyDOOH Investor Conference (Digital Out Of Home). He’ll be presenting a talk called “Digesting Our Acquisitions” for conference delegates working in the digital signage industry.
In April 2009, Cineplex acquired Calgary’s Onsite Media Network Inc., followed by the July 2010 acquisition of Waterloo’s Digital Display and Communications Inc. and EK3 Technologies Inc., of London, Ontario, in August 2013.
EK3, which counted among its clients Tim Horton’s, Target, Walmart, RBC, BMO and McDonald’s, operated a SaaS software solution for indoor digital signage. Cineplex acquired EK3, along with its proprietary software, in a deal valued at $40 million.
Cineplex Digital Solutions has been taking the “Out of Home” digital advertising market seriously, in keeping with the new paradigm of user engagement and mobile technology.
“Big digital screens that run a loop of irrelevant advertising content does nothing to augment the experience for people visiting that environment,” wrote vice president and general manager Steve Harris in a recent blog post. “We talk often with operators of these kinds of venues, and what they’re saying – consistently – is that they want a more meaningful, impactful return from digital.”
The open house will occur at Cineplex Digital Solutions’ new office in Waterloo, located at 137 Northfield Drive West, Waterloo ON N2L 5A6, from 2 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
