Thriving business incubators like Communitech and The Accelerator Centre are taking the sting out of the recent struggles of Research in Motion. The folks at Waterloo tech startup Sortable.com have come up with a great infographic about the Waterloo region, otherwise known as Canada’s “Tech Triangle”. Those who follow Canadian tech will know the area is Canada’s second attempt at a Silicon Valley like hub after Nortel imploded and took much of the wind out of the Ottawa tech scene.

While the struggles of Research in Motion make headline news around the world, the area has expanded out of the shadow of the formidable innovator. The region is now home to more than 850 tech firms and employs nearly 30,000. Hundreds of startups have emerged in the past three years alone, meaning the area looks like it will continue to thrive regardless of what happens to the BlackBerry-maker.
