St. Marys Cement: McInnis Plant Presents Its Alternative Low-Carbon Fuels Project

PORT-DANIEL-GASCONS, QC, Sept. 17, 2026 /CNW/ — As part of a public information session to be held on September 18th, Cement St. Marys will present its energy conversion project to the community, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the Ciment McInnis plant in Port-Daniel.

The proposed project involves the gradual replacement of a portion of the petroleum coke currently used with low-carbon alternative fuels, including forest biomass and other alternative fuels. The objective is to achieve an estimated 20% thermal substitution by 2030 and, over the longer term, up to 70%.

The proposed scenario includes the installation of new on-site equipment to process and feed the alternative fuels, including a grinder, a dryer and enclosed storage facilities. These improvements are intended to support the plant’s energy transition while incorporating measures to mitigate potential environmental impacts.

“This project represents an important step in reducing our plant’s carbon footprint. We want to advance this energy conversion while remaining responsive to the community and relying on solutions tailored to the realities of the region,” said Philippe Marceau, Director of operations.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation, the economic development corporation of the Mi’gmaq communities of Gespeg, Gesgapegiag and Listuguj. This collaboration is based on an Impact and Benefit Agreement, as well as several years of joint work to promote the sustainable use of forest biomass and the development of a circular economy in the Gaspé region.

During the public consultation session, the team responsible for preparing the authorization application and related studies will engage with residents and interested parties on the project’s objectives, schedule, regulatory process and proposed mitigation measures. Feedback received will help guide the project’s next steps.
