Rideau Hall to host community-building events to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 25, 2026 /CNW/ — The public is invited to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) by learning more about Indigenous cultures and traditions during reconciliation-focused events at Rideau Hall starting on September 26, 2026.
As public commemoration of the impacts of the residential school system is a vital component of the reconciliation process, members of the public are encouraged to attend a Sacred Fire ceremony and take part in an educational activity.
Doors Open to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Saturday, September 26, 2026, and Sunday, September 27, 2026
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Rideau Hall will hold a special Doors Open weekend that will include reconciliation-oriented interactive activities. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Indigenous cultures, stories and traditions by viewing Indigenous artwork throughout the residence. Interactive art activities will also be offered, focused on learning and healing through art.
In the Reception Room, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Inuk Elder Aigah Attagutsiak will light and maintain a qulliq. Visitors can learn about its history and significance.

Sacred Fire Ceremony
Wednesday, September 30, 2026
9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Rideau Hall will host a public Sacred Fire to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples together to reflect, build community and exchange knowledge on the impacts of the residential school system. Beginning with an opening ceremony of approximately 45 minutes, the fire will then be tended until 1 p.m. The ceremony will be led by apprentice Fire Keeper Sheldon McGregor, from Kitigan Zibi.
Visitors wishing to participate in the opening ceremony are asked to arrive in time for a 9:00 a.m. start.
