Pabineau First Nation Launches Mother Earth Watcher: A New Indigenous-Led Model for Environmental Intelligence in Canada
SAINT JOHN, NB, Sept. 25, 2026 /CNW/ — Pabineau First Nation is taking a leadership role in the future of environmental stewardship and project development with the launch of Mother Earth Watcher (MEW), an Indigenous-owned environmental intelligence initiative designed to provide trusted, real-time environmental monitoring for major projects across Canada.
“Mother Earth Watcher represents a transformational Nation-building opportunity for Indigenous communities to lead the future of environmental stewardship,” said Pabineau First Nation Chief Terry Richardson. “By combining Indigenous knowledge with advanced Canadian technology, we are creating a model that can be replicated across the country, creating opportunities for partnerships and long-term economic growth while building confidence in responsible development.”
Supported by a non-repayable contribution of $714,000 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the project will establish the governance, data stewardship framework, and business model required to bring this innovative Indigenous-led capability to market.

Mother Earth Watcher combines Indigenous knowledge with advanced environmental monitoring technologies to create a community-owned source of truth on land, water, air quality, and wildlife conditions surrounding resource, infrastructure, and industrial developments. Unlike traditional monitoring approaches, the system is owned and governed by the Nation, ensuring environmental information remains transparent, trusted, and responsive to community priorities.
Developed in partnership with New Brunswick technology company SeafarerAI Technology Inc., Mother Earth Watcher leverages Canadian-built environmental intelligence technology to provide continuous monitoring, data analysis, and reporting capabilities that can support informed decision-making by communities, governments, regulators, and project developers.
The initiative represents a significant opportunity to establish a scalable Indigenous-led model for environmental oversight at a time when major projects increasingly require meaningful engagement, transparency, and trusted environmental data throughout the project lifecycle.
The approved first phase of the initiative lays the foundation for a larger pilot project planned for deployment in 2027. The full pilot is valued at approximately $2.96 million and will serve as a demonstration of how Indigenous-owned monitoring infrastructure can strengthen confidence, transparency, and collaboration around major developments.
Pabineau First Nation is actively exploring partnerships with industry, investors, and organizations interested in advancing innovative approaches to environmental stewardship, Indigenous participation in the economy, and responsible project development.
