Argo CEO Praveen Arichandran talks to Cantech Letter

Argo (Argo Stock Quote, Chart, News, Analysts, Financials TSXV:ARGH) founder and CEO Praveen Arichandran says the future of urban transit should be as seamless as hailing a ride on your phone, only electric, affordable, and built for everyone.

Arichandran told Ticker Take host Jon Erlichman that his company is making that vision real by developing what he calls “the world’s first vertically integrated on-demand transit system for cities.”

Speaking at the 2025 Cantech Investment Conference in Toronto on Oct. 9, the Toronto-born entrepreneur described how his path from Facebook’s international growth team to Tesla’s first global head of growth led him back to Canada to launch a company aimed at transforming public transportation.

“I’ve spent the entirety of my career at the intersection of bleeding-edge technology and business models that can drive a meaningful impact on people and on the world,” Arichandran said. “Now we’re building that impact here at home.”

Arichandran said his career began after graduating from the University of Waterloo and joining Facebook’s international growth team, which took him to Singapore to lead expansion efforts in Asia. He later helped develop what became Facebook’s Internet.org initiative, a project that connected over 100 million people to the internet.

“Super proud of the work we did there,” he said.

After leaving Facebook, Arichandran joined Tesla as its first global head of growth, where he helped transition the company from a traditional showroom-based sales model to an online and referral-driven system. He described the experience as formative in learning how to combine technology and real-world infrastructure at scale.

Returning to Canada after several years abroad, Arichandran said his goal was to build a globally disruptive company at home. That led to the creation of Argo, founded in June 2024, which he describes as “the world’s first vertically integrated on-demand transit system for cities.”

Argo’s model integrates smart routing technology, electric vehicles, and data-driven operations into one platform designed for municipalities.

“Our vision is a future where public transit is more convenient than driving, but as affordable as taking the bus,” he said.

Through Argo’s platform, passengers can summon an X1 electric bus, a purpose-built, accessible vehicle manufactured by Turkish automaker Karsan Otomotiv and equipped with Argo’s proprietary integration hardware, via mobile app or phone call.

For cities, Argo’s system offers an opportunity to electrify fleets and supplement existing bus routes with flexible, on-demand service.

“For municipalities, what that means is they can quickly and cost-effectively electrify their fleets and augment transit infrastructure with on-demand service,” he said.

Despite being a young company, Argo has rapidly expanded its footprint. Its first deployment launched in Bradford West Gwillimbury, Ontario, in early 2025, where Argo replaced the town’s fixed-route system within months.

“By June, just in two months, we doubled their overall total transit ridership,” Arichandran said.

Within three months, Bradford’s council voted to transition to a five-year long-term contract with Argo.

The company has since signed a $10.9-million, 12-month contract with the City of Brampton, one of Ontario’s largest transit operators, to provide first- and last-mile connectivity that complements its existing public transit network.

“We’ve deployed the solution, shown that it works, fully replaced a legacy transit system in one municipality, and are currently showing that in municipalities that have robust transit infrastructure, we can augment that and drive more ridership,” Arichandran said.

Beyond technology and contracts, he emphasized Argo’s social impact.

“We’ve given people who have been marginalized, who haven’t had access to mobility to get to jobs, healthcare, education, the freedom and control to get back out there and drive value,” he said. The system, he added, has enabled new employment and community access for residents who previously faced transportation barriers.

Arichandran said he envisions Argo as both a technology company and a partner to municipalities investing in the electrification of public transit.

“We are providing to cities both the capital infrastructure and the technology-enabled operations over long-term contracts to enable this,” he said, adding that global transit electrification represents a multi-trillion-dollar market opportunity.

“What I’m excited about is this future where taking public transit is the most convenient way to get around within and across our cities,” he said. “The impact that has on the communities and on the people that live there has been nothing short of inspiring.”
