Mobify acquires Chicago-based geolocation marketing company Dónde

Vancouver’s Mobify, which helps companies build mobile-friendly eCommerce sites and apps, has acquired Dónde, a Chicago-based company whose platform helps marketers serve customized content to consumers using geolocation technology.

Mobify’s platform, which runs on Amazon Web Services, optimizes content for mobile devices.

“A lot of companies still think of a mobile device or phone as just a smaller screen but it is much more than that,” Mobify chief marketing officer Cliff Conneighton told Fortune. “It’s an appendage for people. Their mobile is with them all the time, and that’s a different dynamic than having to get to a laptop to do something.”

Dónde’s platform helps retailers learn who is looking at their content, where they are from, what device they are using, and how they are interacting with the brand, with a back-end analytics dashboard that sifts data to uncover variables in behaviors and trends.

Mobify’s clients include Ann Taylor, Crocs, Carnival Cruises, Bosch, Superdry, Eddie Bauer, Tommy Bahama and Beyond the Rack.

Beyond the Rack has been beta testing Mobify’s new form of retail push notification messaging, called Web Engagement Messaging, which allows retailers to send a push notification to customers, even if they don’t have the retailer’s app installed on their mobile device.

Web Engagment Messaging currently works on Google’s Chrome browser, but will eventually integrate with a similar technology employed by Apple’s Safari browser.

In 2013, Mobify ranked highest among all vendors in Forrester’s end-of-year Mobile Commerce Solution Providers report.

On Twitter Dónde thanked its customers, investors and supporters, adding, “We’re excited to grow even faster and continue to transform commerce with Mobify.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
