Burnaby’s Delta-Q Technologies supplies battery chargers to Spain’s Volta Motorbikes

Spanish motorcycle manufacturer Volta Motorbikes has chosen Delta-Q Technologies, a Burnaby-based developer of battery charging technologies, as supplier of battery charging solutions for its BCN City and BCN Sport electric motorcycles.

Delta-Q products gave us a technological and reliable solution, which fits with our targets,” says Volta Motorbikes General Manager Marc Barceló.

Just unveiled this month in Europe, the BCN City and Sport motorbikes carry a Delta-Q QuiQ 1000 Industrial Battery Charger, with a 3 kWh lithium polymer (LiPo) battery pack. The battery takes two hours to charge on a 220V AC standard outlet.

The motorbikes have approximately a 70 kilometre range.

Our application engineers tell me that the bikes are fun to ride, lightweight and offer a lot of storage. The lithium-ion battery pack, vehicle control unit (VCU) and motor controller were designed by Volta, and features more than 50 on-board sensors to make sure that the energy story system is optimized.

The energy storage system works with an algorithm specially designed by Delta-Q for Volta, which allows the VCU to engage or disengage the charger when it needs to.

The energy system also alerts the motorbike’s owner with information regarding the bike’s location and state of charge.

Delta-Q’s primarily supplies battery charging systems to electric vehicle manufacturers, specializing in things like golf carts, fork lifts, aerial work platforms and floor care machines.

Founded in 1999, Delta-Q technology powers over 1.2 million electric vehicles worldwide.

Volta Motorbikes meanwhile has been expanding its dealer network across Europe, with one dealer in Mexico, and plans to move into North America.
