Fibernetics Acquires Calgary’s Nucleus Information Services For Western Expansion

Cambridge, Ontario’s Fibernetics, a voice and data infrastructure provider for both residential and business users, has acquired Calgary’s Nucleus Information Services Inc., the city’s first ISP, founded back in 1993.

The deal allows Fibernetics to expand into western Canada, and reciprocally offers Nucleus access to NEWT Business Services, as well as the Worldline Residential Home Phone and Internet services offered by Fibernetics.

Nucleus is the largest independently owned and operated ISP in Western Canada.

“Having the privilege of acquiring Calgary’s first ISP is the exact shot in the arm strategically that Fibernetics have been looking for,” said Fibernetics President John Stix. “We are growing through acquisition as part of our development strategy to expand our full suite of services into Western Canada and we are looking at other opportunities as well. Nucleus is the ideal fit for that strategy. They are an award winning ISP whose culture meshes perfectly with ours. Our ‘customer first’ philosophy is matched by theirs and we plan to leverage that customer service passion along with their experience and talents to help build significant market share in Western Canada.”

Nucleus is headquartered in Calgary, with an office in Edmonton, and offers business grade voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) and internet services.

“This is a great fit for both organizations,” said Cheryl McDonald, Nucleus Information Service COO. “Fibernetics’ focus on customer happiness is completely in line with the ideas and philosophies that have made Nucleus successful to date. Our dedication to delivering the highest level of customer service while still providing high quality, reliable telecom services to our clients can only be strengthened by this union.”

The acquisition will add approximately 2 million customers to Fibernetics’ existing customer base in Ontario and Quebec, according to CTO Francisco Dominguez.

Fibernetics has 200 employees in offices in Ontario, Bulgaria and the Dominican Republic, and serves over 300,000 customers daily.

Their NEWT private branch exchange (PBX) system is a voice and data carrier that bypasses the internet at large in favour of keeping customers’ communications on a private network run by Fibernetics. The provide hardware and replace existing business phone lines, purporting to save businesses approximately 80% on their communications bills. There is also a “softphone” virtual version of the hardware.
