“Boys Planet (Korean: 보이즈 플래닛) debuted as a South Korean reality competition series in 2023. The show made its premiere on Mnet on February 2, 2023, broadcasting every Thursday at 20:00 KST. However, starting from February 16, 2023, the broadcast time was adjusted to 20:50 KST.

The show gathered an immense number of applicants, out of which 98 diverse contestants were chosen. These participants were evenly divided into two distinct groups, namely K-Group and G-Group.

In a live broadcast of the grand finale on April 20, 2023, Boys Planet announced the final nine contestants. These individuals will form the new group known as Zerobaseone (Korean: 제로베이스원; RR: Jerobeiseuwon), also shortened to ZB1.

Boys Planet is recognized as the follow-up series to Girls Planet 999, distinguishing itself by exclusively featuring male contestants this time.

“Boys Planet embraced a cosmic theme, where the two competing groups, K-Group and G-Group, represented “planets.” The hosts of the show were termed “Star Masters.” Guided by seven Masters, the contestants navigated through multiple rounds of assessment, showcasing their talents in singing, dancing, and rapping. After each stage, the audience, referred to as “Star Creators,” cast their votes for their preferred trainees, playing a pivotal role in deciding the final debut group.

Unlike its predecessor, Girls Planet 999, which only accepted applications from South Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan, Boys Planet broadened its horizons to include international applicants. The audition process was conducted in two phases: the initial round from December 11, 2021, to February 11, 2022, and the subsequent round from June 27, 2022, to August 21, 2022. The final selection of 98 contestants was not confined by nationality, agency affiliation, or previous experience in singing, ensuring a diverse array of talent from 84 countries and regions, including South Korea, various parts of Asia, Europe, North and South America, and the Middle East, representing 229 management agencies.

The ultimate objective of Boys Planet was to form a new nine-member global K-pop boy group. This ambitious endeavor aimed to pioneer the debut of the first 5th generation K-pop group, composed of international trainees from various corners of the world.”
