Game of Thrones or “Pokémon Go? Yahoo Canada lists top crazes of 2016

Yahoo Canada has released its 2016 list of Canada’s top obsessions and crazes. The list, which is heavy on televised docu-drama, hookups, and video games, is part of a comprehensive set of listicles covering the year many wish would just end, already.

Coming in 10th on Yahoo’s list is “Star Wars”. With Rogue One set to release on December 16th of this year, just one year after the previous “VII – The Force Awakens” it’s no surprise that made an appearance on this list. It was also recently announced that Rogue One will be a standalone movie, meaning it will have no sequel.

The term “Animal Jam” came up next in 9th place. Don’t have kids and you’re wondering what you’ve missed? This massively multiplayer online (MMO) educational game was developed by WindWorks and is partnered with National Geographic. It was released on September 9th, 2010 and is currently the one of the largest educational kid’s games in the world with over 55 million registered players as of 2016.

Next up is the insanely popular sandbox game, Minecraft. Developed by Mojang and released in 2011 this game has become a favourite among both children and adults, it even has its own convention. Minecraft is the best-selling PC game of all time and is second place on the list of best-selling video games (just behind Tetris). The appeal of Minecraft is that you can quite literally build anything, users have built full and to scale cities which have taken thousands of hours and multiple people to construct.

More games: “League of Legends” came in seventh on Yahoo Canada’s list. Developed by Riot Games and released in 2009 this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) is one of the most popular games in the competitive gaming scene now. Worldwide, there are multiple tournaments every year and millions in prize money can be won if you’re good enough. The 2016 World Championships ended on October 29th and the first place South Korean team took home approximately $2.6-million (CAD).

Tinder, the dating and hookup app which has been under fire seemingly since its release 2012 in for increasing the spread of STD’s among those who use the app for casual hookups comes in sixth place for 2016. For those of you who don’t use tinder, a user creates a profile using pictures and a small amount of personal information and then the user “swipes” to like or dislike other people. If both users swipe to like each other, a match occurs and the users are able to message each other through the app.

The Netflix blockbuster “House of Cards” came in fifth. Season four of the long American Political drama. The season premiered on on March 4, meaning most devoted fans of the show have been waiting for season five since about March 5. Season Five is expected next February.

“Walking Dead” the horror drama series comes in on this drama-focused list in fourth place. The Walking Dead, if you happen to have been turned into one of the undead for the past decade, is a series that follows around a group of survivors as they try and deal with internal conflicts, bandits, and of course Zombies. The seventh season is currently underway and the series has already been confirmed for an eighth.

Yahoo Canada’s bronze medal goes to “Pokémon Go”, the app that seemingly took over the internet for at least a month. It was responsible for bringing a large community out of their basements and into the sunlight for what must have seemed like the first time in years.

Runner up goes to Apple’s iPhone, the device that manages to remain the same year after year. But of course, new leaks are saying that the next iPhone will be better than ever before! I’ll believe it when I see it.

Hold the door for the number one spot for Yahoo Canada’s top craze of 2016 is (drum roll please), none other than…. Game of Thrones, of course. This insanely popular series has most certainly earned the top spot with its plot heavy story, huge social media following, and of course all the memes. The only question is, how have any of its actors survived to stage a seventh season?
