The competition is open to any college or university student, in any year and any program, who feels that they have the skills to enter the competition.
True to its name, the Code/Design to Win competition is actually two separate competitions, each featuring its own prizes.
Students interested in entering the competition are required to write a preliminary exam at a participating school.
Top students from the exam process will be invited to the Communitech Hub in the Waterloo region, and will then participate in the finals on on January 20 & 21, 2017, where they’ll be introduced to some of Kitchener-Waterloo’s high-profile tech companies and compete for a chance to win the $5,000 grand prize.
Students can choose to compete in both Code to Win and Design to Win at the exam level, but must choose one if selected to move on to the Finals in January.
Students who miss the physical exams taking place at a school at a particular time can request to take a virtual exam online. Simply keep an eye on the Code to Win homepage for instructions on how to register.
While Code to Win entrants are required to bring their own computer, the Design to Win exams will be a paper-based, simplified version of a Google Design Spring, evaluating skills on a combination of UX and UI.
Students will be presented with a problem statement and asked to solve the problem by designing a program or app, represented by early-stage prototyping and a creative thought process.
Entrants selected to participate in the finals will be provided with a travel stipend based on the location of their school, and should cover appropriate hotel, meals, and travel expenses.
Finalists will be notified in mid-November.
