The Trailer Park Boys want Sidney Crosby to bring Stanley Cup to Sunnyvale

Ricky and Bubble want Sidney Crosby to bring the Stanley Cup to Sunnyvale Trailer Park.

Greasy little cheeseburgers. Pepperoni sticks. Jalapeno chips.

All of these food delights will presumably be on the menu if and when Sidney Crosby brings the Stanley Cup to Sunnyvale Trailer Park. Crosby, who was born in Halifax and grew up in nearby Cole Harbour, has locals riveted to the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals even as the rest of Canada, with no hometown team to cheer for, isn’t.

Crosby is such a revered figure in the province that its premier, Stephen McNeil, was recently called on by the media for his opinion on the matter. McNeil says he is, for the time being, putting aside his allegiance to the Montreal Canadians to get behind the Penguins, whom he is confident will win their second cup under “Sid the Kid’s” captaincy.

In Nova Scotia, that’s about as big as it gets, right? Not exactly.

McNeil’s popularity is easily eclipsed by that of the fictional Trailer Park Boys, the booze-swilling, kitty-loving, shopping cart stealing residents of the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park, who have parlayed a Canadian hit on Showcase into international stardom on Netflix, with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Jimmy Kimmel coming along for the ride.

Sunnyvale residents are no doubt hoping the icy relationship between the Trailer Park Boys and the Pittsburgh Penguins captain is now just water under the fridge.

This week two of the boys, Rob Wells and Mike Smith, who play Ricky and Bubbles on the show, took to YouTube to try and convince Crosby to bring the cup to Sunnyvale trailer park. They filmed a video entitled “Dear Sid, please bring the Stanley Cup back to Sunnyvale!”.

Sitting on a pile of wood, the pair try and tempt Crosby to bring the cup to infamous trailer park, where they intend to have a huge celebratory bonfire and torch a school bus. Ricky and Bubbles then openly wonder if Crosby should continue to be nicknamed “Sid the Kid” or should now be called “Sid the Man”.

So, do the boys have a chance? Well first of all someone will have to locate exactly where Sunnyvale Trailer Park is. The park’s Wikipedia page lists it as “somewhere on the outskirts of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia”. If that logistical hurdle is overcome, Crosby seems to be at least aware of the existence of the Trailer Park Boys. Check out his reaction to one of the show’s better known inside jokes, caught when he was filming a Tim Horton’s commercial with fellow NHLer and local star Nathan MacKinnon.

And if that doesn’t convince him, what about the “little known fact” that Bubbles actually used to coach Crosby?

“I taught him a lot of the stuff he knows, all those fancy tricks through the feet and stuff,” Bubbles told Hockey Night in Canada in 2011. “That was me. I taught Sid all that stuff…”

So it’s a lock, right? Maybe not, says Bubbles, who admits to a rough patch in the relationship with the hockey legend. “He’s pretending like he doesn’t know me, even though I basically taught him everything he knows. He won’t return my calls,” says Bubbles.

Sunnyvale residents are no doubt hoping the icy relationship between the Trailer Park Boys and the Pittsburgh Penguins captain is now just water under the fridge.
