Cape Breton's Health Outcomes Worldwide to deploy software in Nova Scotia

New Waterford, Cape Breton company Health Outcomes Worldwide (HOW) has been awarded a contract by the province of Nova Scotia to manage phase one of its Provincial Wound Care Program Redesign.
Using HOW’s e-health software, the program will integrate and harmonize the current model for wound care management, focusing not only on patient care, but also on clinicians, long-term care facilities, home care workers, care givers, physicians and acute care providers.
The company’s software, how2trak, gives healthcare providers real-time, evidence-based direction wound care management, allowing patients to heal more quickly while also reducing costs to the overall system.
“We applaud the province of Nova Scotia for being one of the first in North America to consider a program that will undoubtedly improve wound care management for patients and health care providers alike,” said HOW Founder and CEO Corrine McIsaac, adding, “Our team is absolutely thrilled to be playing a key role in this process.”
The contract will involve consulting with industry leaders to develop formulary adjustments, the analysis of wound care funding models, and the development of educational materials for practitioners, followed by recommendations around government policy and legislation.
HOW has developed its Intelligent Practice Assistant, and also has the largest wound database in Canada, which allows users to respond using evidence-based cues and to follow best practices in health care.
Headquartered in New Waterford, HOW also has offices in Albert, Ontario and British Columbia, and raised $1.5 million in VC funding during 2015.
With a staff of 12, HOW also won a five-year contract to deploy how2trak in 10 long-term healthcare facilities in 2015, and finalized a partnership with Think Research, allowing it to integrate how2trak into existing electronic health records.
“I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments the HOW team has made in the past year and I feel we are well positioned to continue this momentum throughout 2016,” said McIsaac. “HOW is leading the way in healthcare software solutions and as a result, we are helping patients to heal more quickly while helping doctors and nurses do their jobs more efficiently.”
Having worked first-hand as a Manager in Home Care with the Nova Scotia Department of Health for some time, McIsaac saw first-hand how the effective use of data could improve outcomes both for patients and for the health care system.
Her insight led to the development of a best practices tracking system for wound care intervention, which saw a $3 million saving to Nova Scotia, shortly after which she left to found HOW.
