Montreal's Mighty Cast to unveil Nex Band for Internet of Things at CES

Montreal’s Mighty Cast will be unveiling its Nex Band, a wristband designed to control a variety of Internet of Things applications, at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Working with a set of five interchangeable controllers on the device that Mighty Cast calls Mods, the Nex Band can let the user control a home’s lighting, entertainment system, home appliances and smart devices.
“Current wearables have an average engagement of a few months because they are either single function devices or users can’t add new features to their bands,” said Adam Adelman, CEO and Co-founder of Mighty Cast. “Expanding into IoT gives our users yet another opportunity to customize and make their own wearable experience. We want our users to unleash their inner maker and invent custom actions to connect and control their world right from their wrists.”
Mods are literally modular and detachable from the Nex Band. They can be swapped with other users. Users can also create Hacks, shortcuts that allow users to customize their Mods for specific purposes. Until now, Mighty Cast has been targeting its product at both teenagers and the hacker/maker community.
Mighty Cast recently partnered with IFTTT (If This Then That), a web service that allows users to create specific “recipes” for accomplishing tasks.
For the Nex Band, that would mean creating hacks to do things like opening a garage door, switching on the coffee maker, or adjusting a temperature, by tapping on a Mod.
Mighty Cast has raised $4.8 million U.S. in venture capital, and also received a $1 million government grant from the Canadian Media Fund to develop a game for the Nex Band.
The Nex Band comes in two sizes (small/medium and medium/large) and is available for pre-order for $99.
