Apple lease of Ottawa area space rumoured to be for Apple Car development

Apple has leased a 22,100 square foot space in the G. Best building at 411 Legget Dr. in the Kanata Research Park, to be dedicated to research and development, the Ottawa Business Journal has confirmed through several sources.
Although Apple has kept mum on the purpose of the new Ottawa area space, the fact that it will be dedicated to research and development is something of a surprise, given that Apple famously spends a much lower portion of its revenue on R&D than its rivals, Google, Facebook and Qualcomm.
With global revenues of $233 billion U.S., Apple upped its R&D spending in 2015 to slightly more than $8 billion, a 34% increase over 2014.
More significant for Apple watchers is the idea that the company has until now only hinted at its Apple Car, which Apple has said will be unveiled in 2020.
Apple’s self-driving car project, called Project Titan, is supposedly based out of a secret facility in Sunnyvale, California.
Kanata is already a heavy hitter in automotive technology, as it is already home to QNX Software Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlackBerry.
QNX, of course, is working to develop its own autonomous vehicle technology.
Building owner Kanata Research Park Properties’ website describes the space as a “full-floor office suite with executive boardroom, meeting rooms, several offices, server room, lunchroom, showers, private balconies and lab space.”
The building’s current anchor tenant is DragonWave, a supplier of packet microwave radio systems for mobile and access IP networks.
