The Codecreate event will host up to 400 students aged 8 to 18 at events across British Columbia, in Vancouver on December 5, in Victoria on December 12, hosted by MetaLab, in Prince George on December 12, hosted by Innovation Central Society (ICS), and in Kelowna on January 23, hosted by the UBC Okanagan Innovative Learning Centre.
Each of the host organizers are organizing the events with funding support from the Government of B.C. through the BCTF’s Computer Using Educators of BC.
“Lighthouse Labs is proud to take part in Codecreate as both Learning Partner across the province and Host Partner for the Vancouver event,” says Lighthouse Labs Co-Founder and Chief Talking Officer Jeremy Shaki. “Code is a fundamental part of everything we use in our personal and professional lives and we should all understand how it works. It is imperative that we show Canada’s next generation that code is a vessel for whatever passions you may have.”
Students of the Vancouver School Board and surrounding school districts, including teachers from the BC Teachers’ Federation’s Computer Using Educators of BC, and students from the First Nations Technology Council’s school network.
“At the Technology Council, our goal is to provide opportunities for First Nations youth to explore creative ways of using technology and to make space for our young innovators in BC’s tech sector, said First Nations Technology Council executive director Denise Williams. “We hope that participating in the Codecreate events across the province and the Hour of Code campaign, we will spark a passion for technology in the hearts of First Nations youth and draw more support for initiatives like this.”
Lighthouse Labs, founded in 2013, claims a 100% rate for the more than 350 students it has graduated from its various learn-to-code programs.
Aside from the workshop in which the student will work on a hands-on project with the help of mentors, students will also receive a lunch provided by Codecreate’s food partner Panago.
