Vancouver’s Mio Global Unveils New Wristband Health Tech at CES

Vancouver-based Mio Global is showing off its brand-new heart-rate monitoring wristbands the FUSE and ALPHA 2 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Along with car technology and 4K TVs, wearable health tech will be a hot ticket at CES this year, with big players like Samsung and nascent tech giants like Waterloo’s Thalmic Labs showing off devices.

Mio Global’s products differentiate themselves from most heart-monitoring equipment by the fact that they are worn on the wrist, rather than necessitating a chest strap with monitors connected to the torso.

Aside from boasting an EKG-accurate heart monitor, the ALPHA 2 contains an accelerometer for tracking pace, speed and distance. When connected to the Mio Go app, the wristband claims to provide accurate calorie burn estimates and can contain up to 25 hours of workout data.

Made from silicon, the wristbands are shock resistant, as well as being water resistant to a depth of 30 metres.

“Wearable technology will no doubt be one of the hottest sectors at CES this year,” said CEO Liz Dickinson. “And I am excited to be showcasing Mio’s latest innovations including our new ALPHA 2 and FUSE – giving people access to a complete picture of their activity level and workout data. These products will appeal to a broad set of consumers – from top athletes in training to everyday athletic consumers wanting an easy-to-wear, high-performance device that tracks their heart rate plus more.”

Founded in 1999 by Dickinson, Mio Global have developed several health monitoring devices which communicate vital statistics via Bluetooth to smart devices such as phones or on-bike computers.

Attendees at CES this year can visit Mio Global at booth #74722, Tech West, Sands Expo, level 2 and at Showstoppers, booth # H-9.
