Ottawa Cleantech Firm BluMetric Secures Water Treatment Contract

The Professional Services Division of Ottawa cleantech firm BluMetric Environmental Inc. (TSXV:BLM) has been awarded an engineering services contract extension, for an additional two years and valued at over $2.5 million, by mining company Vale Canada Ltd.

The work involves semi-annual monitoring and reporting for more than 1,000 groundwater wells in Sudbury, Shebandowan and Port Colborne, Ontario.

The Professional Services division focuses on earth sciences and environmental engineering, with an emphasis on activities such as contaminated site redemption, water resource management and industrial safety.

BluMetric also has a Water division, which focuses on designing and building solutions for industrial and wastewater treatment needs.

“This new contract emphasizes not only the stability of our long-time client relationships but the effectiveness of our expanding technology reach and service offering,” said Nell van Walsum, President of BluMetric’s Professional Services Division. “We have been intent on building our skillsets in areas that are highlighted by client needs, and this demand-sensitive strategy has been very effective for the Professional Services Division in this instance.”

In addition to helping Vale obtain Permits to Take Water, as well as with the compliance and monitoring required by those permits, BluMetric will also develop a fully graphic database for managing all of Vale’s groundwater and surface-water data.

The contract follows several fresh senior management appointments, including the installation of Bill Touzel, who had been co-CEO with Roger Woeller, as senior advisor for Strategic Development, as well as the appointment of Jim Hotchkies as Vice President, Commercial, in the Water division.

The contract extension represents some much needed good news in light of the loss of $2.3 million during the company’s previous fiscal year, which it blamed on shrinking margins and increased cost.
