Netflix to bring back Trailer Park Boys

Julian, Bubbles and Ricky will live on at Netflix Canada…Anyone who’s been sitting on the fence regarding cord-cutting, pondering whether or not to keep that hefty cable bill in favour of ditching it forever for streaming online television, now has one extra incentive to join the future.

Trailer Park Boys will be releasing their eighth and ninth seasons exclusively on Netflix, via Entertainment One (eOne).

In keeping with the general themes of other Netflix properties, Kevin Spacey’s character in House of Cards will likely be watching and taking notes from the masters of Sunnyvale Trailer Park on the finer points of how to manipulate the government to obtain power, money and influence.

The mockumentary following Ricky, Julian and Bubbles will bring Netflix viewers in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Nordic countries, and Latin America up to speed with the availability of Seasons 1-7 (possibly bringing new meaning to the term “binge watching”). Meanwhile, the Trailer Park Boys’ already dedicated US and Canadian fan base will be treated to Season 8, presumably all at once.

“Our US and Canadian members love Trailer Park Boys and we’re excited to take their unique brand of humor to our markets throughout the Americas and Europe,” said Netflix vice president of content acquisition Sean Carey.

No spoilers ahead, but Season 8 promises to find Julian running a bar-and-gym operation out of his trailer, with Bubbles operating a “Shed and Breakfast”, while Ricky sits tight on an enormous cache of marijuana hidden in the walls of his mobile home. Long-time viewers will recall the infamous Season 4 episode, called “Workin’ Man”, in which our heroes commandeer Maritime treasure Rita MacNeil’s tour bus, forcing her and her backing group, the Men of the Deeps, to harvest Ricky’s field of dreams in the middle of the night, at gunpoint.

The new season will consist of 10 episodes, and will catch up with the boys to see whether or not their quest for “Freedom 35” ever panned out. Sales of Crown Royal and Coke are likely to see a perceptible uptick.

Along with the series, Netflix will make available three standalone specials, the Community Service Special, Swearnet Special and Trailer Park Boys Xmas, along with two new feature films, to be run after their theatrical releases, Trailer Park Boys 3: Don’t Legalize It and Swearnet.

Trailer Park Boys being made available on Netflix is the latest example of a high-profile TV property to abandon network television for the online world. It is a true example of what Ricky would call “supply and command”, or “getting two birds stoned at once”, or “survival of the fitness”, or possibly, maybe, even a “Best Case Ontario”.
