TSX well represented on list of Canada’s top R&D spenders

Bombardier’s R&D spending rose 27% in 2011, the Montreal-based aerospace giant is preparing for the release of the CSeries, a line of medium-range jet airliners. Research Infosource has released a list of Canada’s top R&D spenders in 2011. The top four companies, Research in Motion, Bombardier, BCE and Magna International are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The report says Research in Motion spent $1.542-billion on research and development last year, Bombardier spent $1.336-billion, and BCE spent $569.1-million. Magma’s total investment was $519.2-million.

Other TSX listed companies scoring highly on the list were Telus, which was 12th, Open Text, which came in 16th, CAE Inc. which took 19th place, Rogers Communications, which placed 21st, and Constellation Software, which was 25th.

With a long wait between its BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 10 platforms, Research in Motion has, in the minds of money, lost its status as an innovator. One piece of evidence that contradicts popular sentiment, however, is the number of patents the Waterloo company continues to file. RIM filed 663 in 2011 alone, placing it in 40th spot on the IFI CLAIMS® 2011 Top 50 US Patent Assignees, just one behind Apple.

Much of the company’s R&D bill, which was up nearly 11% from the $1.39 billion it spent a year prior was spent on BB10, which will debut on mobile devices early next year.

Bombardier’s R&D spending rose 27%, the Montreal-based aerospace giant is preparing for the release of the CSeries, a line of medium-range jet airliners.

Toronto-based Research Infosource is a division of The Impact Group. The policy analysis and development firm publishes popular list such as the “Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities” and “Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals List”.
