Calgary super-app turned eponymous TSX Venture stock Poynt (TSX:PYN) keeps proving there’s more to Alberta than dinosaur bones and grain-fed beef.

At Calgary’s Hotel Arts tonight, Poynt picked up the 2012 Digital Alberta award for best mobile application, beating out Next Stop, a 0.99¢ app available in the iTunes App Store that lets users type in a four-digit stop number to get a listing of Calgary Transit bus times.

Last week, Poynt announced it had passed 16-million unique users of its platform. The app, which was last year featured in a national campaign for Research in Motion, got a foothold in the market through its popularity on BlackBerry devices. When the company made it available for the iPhone, in March of 2010, it already had two-million users on the Blackberry platform. The subsequent growth has come from Android, iPhone users (Poynt is consistently ranked as a top search app in various app stores) and because the company worked hard to shed the potential one-trick-platform label and make itself available across other devices and platforms.

While the GPS enabled location-based search application has consistently posted triple digit growth, the company’s stock has lagged in the face of continued losses, closing today down 7.7% to $.06 cents.

Digital Alberta is an industry-led organization that says it is devoted to promoting and connecting Alberta’s digital media community. The organization says the provincial ICT industry is made up of 6,300 companies, 57,000 employees, and generates over $450 million in annual revenues.
