RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 Camera Licensed from Scalado

RIM today confirmed to Cantech Letter that its new BlackBerry 10 camera is, in part, the result of a licensing deal with Scalado.
When new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins offered a sneak peak at some of the features of its new BlackBerry 10 operating system yesterday, the thing that got the biggest oohs and aahs from the crowd at BlackBerry World were the new camera features.

Vivek Bhardwaj, RIM’s Head Of Software Portfolio, was on hand for a tidy demo that showed the new camera will allow the user to “go back in time” using a circular timeline slider to pick the perfect moment if, say, your subject’s eyes were closed. You can see the technology here:

Yesterday, however, Techcrunch and others in the tech media pointed out that the technology was eerily similar to Rewind, which was developed by a Swedish imaging software company called Scalado. As no mention was made of this deal by Heins, Cantech Letter got hold of RIM today for clarification. Rebecca Freiburger from RIM corporate communications told us this:

“RIM has been working with Scalado on camera technology and has licensed some of the Scalado technology for the BlackBerry 10 platform. As shown during the BlackBerry World Keynote, RIM is planning a unique implementation of the technology on BlackBerry 10 to provide an incredible user experience, allowing for more customization by the user and enabling them to easily capture and share their ‘perfect moments.'”

Negativity about any RIM announcement of late is not new, but some are saying the licensing deal puts a damper on what should have been a clear win for the company, because the technology is not exclusive to RIM. Supporters of the Waterloo-based mobile giant are no doubt hoping the undoubtedly slick technology can gain a foothold on BlackBerry 10 devices before copycat licensing deals pour in.
