Zecotek, Electrovaya and SXC Health: Today in Canadian Tech

Electrovaya co-founder Sankar das Gupta with Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty. Electrovaya today announced it has delivered a 1.5-megawatt-hour-capacity lithium ion SuperPolymer battery energy storage system to the Arizona Public Service Company, that state's largest electric utility.

Zecotek Photonics (TSXV: ZMS) announced its subsidiary, Zecotek Imaging Systems Pte Ltd., has started legal action in United States Federal District Court in Los Angeles against defendants Saint-Gobain Corporation and Philips for infringement of a Zecotek U.S. Patent. Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, CEO of Zecotek said: “We believe that this patent is fundamental, and that damages are very substantial,” Shares of Zecotek were halted today and last traded at $.63 cents. More…

Craig Wireless (TSX:CWG) announced that the The Toronto Stock Exchange has authorized a normal course issuer bid by the company for up to 2,388,290 subordinate voting shares from Feb. 29, 2012, to Feb. 28, 2013, representing up to 5 % of its 47,765,814 shares. iSign Media Solutions (TSXV:ISD) announced it has chosen Telus as its telecommunications provider. iSign CEO Alex Romanov said: “Our association with Telus will enable iSign’s Smart Antenna to include cellular connectivity for remote update of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi content, and delivery of statistics to the iSign back end or server…” Shares of iSign closed today up 6.5% to $.41 cents. Northcore Technologies (TSXV:NTI) announced it has renewed the contract of a key strategic client. The client, which was not named, is one of the 10 largest companies in North America, and has been a long-term customer and key partner, says Northcore. CEO Amit Monga said: “This most recent customer renewal continues an important trend. Our existing clients are finding compelling evidence as to the ongoing benefits of our asset management platform and continue to extend their partnerships with Northcore.” Shares of Northcore closed today down 5.6% to $.085 cents. Burcon NutraScience (TSX:BU) provided an update on its Peazazz branded pea protein. The company says talks with an unnamed partner have now progressed to an advanced stage with Burcon agreeing to a period of exclusivity while the two parties continue their due diligence investigations and negotiations with the goal of forming an alliance, although, the company says no assurance can be made that an agreement will be reached. Burcon CEO Johann Tergesen said: “We are pleased with the market interest that our Peazazz has generated, and we are now making Peazazz a top commercialization priority.” Shares of Burcon closed today down 2.8% to $6.32. Electrovaya (TSX:EFL) announced it has delivered a 1.5-megawatt-hour-capacity lithium ion SuperPolymer battery energy storage system to the Arizona Public Service Company, the state’s largest electric utility. The system will provide energy storage for a pilot program to study ways to optimize the integration of renewable energy sources to the grid. Dr. Raj Das Gupta, Electrovaya’s general manager, energy storage systems said: “Working with major utilities represents a tremendous opportunity for us in the rapidly growing grid energy storage market, and validates the importance of our advanced battery technology and unique toxic chemical-free manufacturing process.” Shares of Electrovaya closed today up 5.1% to $.82 cents. SXC Health Solutions (TSX:SXC) has released its fiscal 2011 financial results. Revenue grew 155% to $5 billion, compared to $1.9-billion in 2010. SXC CEO Mark Thierer said: “In 2011 we achieved the best sales results in our history, completed three acquisitions and continued to deliver on our commitment to closely manage costs. It was a breakout year for the company that led to growing industry recognition along with record-setting financial results”. Shares of SXC were up 5.9% to $67.19. More…
