Connected World magazine has unveiled the winners of its 2016 Connected World Awards, which include a telematics solution from by Oakville, Ontario's Geotab that helped solve a variety of problems for Southern Wine and Spirits of America, in Miami, Florida. The awards recognized entrants from around the world who submitted proposals describing critical pain points in their business that were resolved through a collaboration with an IoT or M2M company. “The technology, combined with forward-thinking across a spectrum of industries, show how well companies can work together to conjure innovative and efficient solutions to problems,” says Peggy Smedley, editorial director of Connected World magazine. “In an industry dominated by competition, it’s inspiring to see the results of what true collaboration looks like.” Southern Wine and Spirits of America has operations spread across 35 states, and manages a fleet of 2,200 vehicles across 6,000 miles for 187,000 customers. State liquor laws regarding distribution of wine and spirits vary across these jurisdictions, which presents the company with a variety of challenges relating to delivery from its distribution center, which stocks about 13,000 different items, to customers large and small, including restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, and mass merchandisers. “It’s a very dynamic situation from a delivery and customer service perspective,” says Larry Sullivan, Southern Wine’s Vice President of Fleet, Safety and Compliance. “Our employees are highly trained and Southern’s facilities are highly automated to allow our customers to place their orders by 5 p.m. and have it delivered to your door when you need it.” Southern Wine & Spirits streamlined their operations using Geotab’s GO7 telematics devices and fleet management solutions, resulting in improved route timing and increased fuel efficiency with software integration, while also enhancing productivity and safety. Cost savings related to vehicle idling alone justified the ROI on using Geotab's telematics hardware. The partnership was recognized with a victory at the Connected World Awards. “We at Geotab are excited to receive this award from Connected World Magazine, a true industry thought leader in the IoT space," said Geotab CEO Neil Cawse. "Southern’s tremendous success with the Geotab GO7 and MyGeotab software solution shows how valuable it is for companies to leverage their data for insight, and it is proof of the power of management by measurement.” The GO7, which provides a fleet manager with a rich collection of information, ranging from refrigeration to distracted driving to proximity to other vehicles, as well as providing camera feeds, was introduced in 2014, and within a few weeks was certified for use on Verizon’s network, which helped Geotab leverage sales into other demographics.
