Société d’assurance automobile du Québec awards five-year Ignition
Interlock contract to Smart Start Canada
DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#AlcoholMonitoring–1A Smart Start LLC (“Smart Start”), the world leader of technology and
services for alcohol Interlock programs, today announced that its
subsidiary Smart Start Canada ULC has been awarded a five-year contract
starting December 2018 for managing the Société d’assurance
automobile du Québec’s (“SAAQ”) Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program.
The Quebec crown corporation is responsible for enforcing the Highway
Safety Code and the Automobile Insurance Act. With more than 20,000
active participants, Quebec’s Ignition Interlock program is the largest
of its kind in Canada. In addition to Quebec, Smart Start’s Canadian
operations include Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
“Smart Start is thrilled to continue increasing its footprint in Canada
by helping the SAAQ improve road safety across the province with the
Ignition Interlock program,” said CEO Matt Strausz. “We are focused on
customer service and superior products to change lives. We look forward
to serving our first customers in Quebec at the end of 2018.”
Founded in 1992, Smart Start is one of the largest suppliers of
technology and services for alcohol Interlock programs, implemented as a
sanction or rehabilitative measure for those convicted of impaired
driving. Smart Start also provides alcohol monitoring products to
criminal justice authorities and persons convicted of a DUI/DWI.
Products are designed and built in the U.S., serving clients in the U.S.
and 18 other countries, including Canada, with more than 700 employees.
Smart Start’s Canadian headquarters is situated in Sherwood Park,
Alberta. The company hit its 1-million
customer milestone in October 2017.
In addition to its success as a partner with U.S. states, Canadian
provinces and other local monitoring agencies to prevent drunk driving
vehicle starts, Smart Start works with national organizations such as
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to improve Ignition Interlock laws.
Currently, numerous governments have enacted all-offender Ignition
Interlock regulations that require offenders to use an Interlock after
their first DUI/DWI arrest. Studies show all-offender laws help
drastically reduce the reoccurrence of a DUI/DWI by changing their
behavior and choices.
