Telus to spend billions to upgrade Alberta to 4G LTE

Telus (Telus Stock Quote, Chart, News: TSX:T) says it will spend $4.2-billion, including a $1-billion this year alone, to upgrade every wireless site it has in Alberta to 4G LTE. The telco says it will also expand its 700 megahertz (MHz) spectrum for use in rural and urban areas.

“Telus’s commitment to improve the lives of Albertans by providing the world’s most advanced communications technology is unwavering,” said executive chair Darren Entwistle. “Telus networks now reach 99 per cent of the province, making Alberta one of the most connected places on the planet. Over the next four years, Telus will invest $4.2-billion to link homes, hospitals, clinics, doctors and pharmacists, schools, libraries, and municipal governments directly to our fibre optic network, bringing advanced broadband services to rural and urban communities. This will give more Albertans access to world-class education programs, economic development opportunities and critical health care solutions in their homes, at work or when they are on the move with their smart phone or tablet. Telus also continues construction on our new $400-million Telus Sky office building in Calgary, further supporting the local economy by creating and sustaining jobs and opportunity.”

The company says its reach will improve the province’s health sector by launching a personal health and personal health record services portal. The company has, in the past several years, become a national player in electronic medical records and health benefits management solutions.

Telus says it will also invest in a flood response program and expand its charity interests in the province.

“Telus is showing confidence in the Alberta economy, and creating the jobs and infrastructure people will rely on for years to come,” said Alberta Premier Jim Prentice. “We appreciate the company’s commitment to growth, and their ability to bring the best technology to Albertans’ doorsteps.”

  • i love alberta. i have lived across canada and alberta is the most balanced place in terms of cleanliness, jobs, safety, cost of living, low taxes, diverse scenery (farmland, mountains, desert, city, etc), decent weather (short cold winters with great christmases and fantastic warm chinooks that roll in to keep you happy)....most of all very very proud albertains who have an identity and a sense of a proud community who im most cases are very respectful and loyal to their city. you cannot be in a better place.
