If you live on the East Coast of Canada you’ve more than likely heard the name Frankie MacDonald before, and if you haven’t then you should check him out.

The Sydney, Nova Scotia-based YouTube sensation earned himself YouTube’s Silver Play Button, awarded for getting 100,000 subscribers, earlier this week and was sure to upload a video to let everyone know.

Frankie MacDonald’s YouTube channel is hard to describe. It consists mainly of weather forecast videos and storm warnings for the better part of North America, but also features more comedic videos of him singing and dancing. Over the years, MacDonald has made a name for himself with viewers from around the world for his humour, enthusiasm and ambition: he recently announced a new goal of hitting a million views.

Silver Play Buttons are only given to channels that have surpassed 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, and Frankie did just that on his YouTube channel “dogsandwolves” which he created on June 13th, 2011. On top of Frankie’s current subscriber count of 125,058 he also has an incredible 24.1-million total views of his videos.

“I made my first scenery video on December 27, 2007 and I made my first YouTube video on December 16, 2009,” MacDonald told Metronews recently. He notes that he would have had an even higher view count than he currently does, But due to him having to create a new YouTube channel he lost all the views and subscribers which he had on his previous channel.

MacDonald’s rise to fame began after he started uploading his videos to the Weather Network which gave him exposure across Canada. Many people quickly fell in love with his unique and extremely passionate way of announcing the weather.

“My Name is Frankie MacDonald and I am from Sydney Nova Scotia, I do my Own Weather Reports Especially During Winter Months including Blizzards and Winter Storms and in the summer I do my Hurricanes and Typhoon Weather Reports as well and I do my own dancing videos and my own comedy Show When I was a little boy I want to be a Weatherman when I grow up and I do my Own Videos.” reads the description of MacDonald’s YouTube channel.

There are four tiers of awards for YouTubers, the first being the Silver Play Button for reaching 100,000 subscribers, Gold Play Button for earning 1,000,000 subscribers, Diamond Play Button when you reach 10,000,000, and lastly the Ruby Play Button which only one YouTuber has received so far and is not even shown on the YouTube rewards page.

The YouTube channel for the infamous game reviewer “PewDiePie”, which is owned by Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg is the only person to have ever received the Ruby Play Button, his channel has over 53 million subscribers, over 14 billion total video views, and was created during April of 2010.

In total, there are somewhere around 3,275 channels that qualify for a gold play button and 80 that qualify for the diamond play buttons. Play Buttons are actually so in demand that counterfeit ones are being sold on eBay for around $55.
