Byron Capital calls on Gilmour, Ellis for Stanley Cup Picks

After correctly picking the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup in Byron Capital’s Playoff Report last year, former-Leaf Doug Gilmour thinks there will be a parade in Pittsburgh this year.
With top analysts like Tom Astle, Douglas Loe and Rob Goff, Toronto’s Byron Capital is known for its killer stock picks.

Today, however, the firm let the real “Killer” take the reigns. In a special Stanley Cup Playoff Special Report, Byron enlisted the help of an all-star cast of prognosticators, including former Leaf’s Doug “Killer” Gilmour and Ron Ellis, to take a look a what the 2012 NHL Playoffs, which began last night and will continue for the better part of two months, will hold.

While Byron’s Stanley Cup predictions are lighthearted relief from the grind of breaking down oft-complex balance sheets, the report has a serious purpose, as the firm makes a donation to a charity selected by each of their hockey analysts. This year’s charities included The Canadian Cancer Society, The Ron Ellis Team Canada Foundation, the Scotty Gomez Foundation, Right To Play, Sports Legacy Institute (a partner of Stopconcussions.com) and the March of Dimes Canada.

So who did the experts pick? First notice goes to Gilmour, not for his beloved status in Hogtown, but because he correctly picked the Boston Bruins to win last year and rightly pegged Bruins goalie Tim Thomas as MVP. Gilmour thinks 2012 will be the year the Pittsburgh Penguins return to glory and that their netminder, Marc-André Fleury, will pick up the Conn Smythe Trophy en route. Gilmour is joined by another Byron guest analyst and former NHL’er Chris Campoli, who also thinks the Penguins will bring home Lord Stanley. Campoli, however, thinks mercurial centreman Evgeni Malkin will snag the personal hardware.

The only other team with more than one vote in Byron’s Stanley Cup report was the Vancouver Canucks, who were chosen by former Leaf great Ron Ellis and ex-Oiler and current Head of Institutional Sales at Byron Capital Markets, Nick Stajduhar. Both men believe Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo will win the Conn Smythe Trophy.

The picks are rounded out by former Oilers netminder Wayne Cowley, who believes the New York Rangers will win the cup for the first time since 1994, and a trio of hosts from theScore.com, Greg Sansone, Cam Stewart and Renee Paquette, who think the Boston Bruins will repeat.

Byron Capital also invited their Stanley Cup analysts to grade players according to their equities rating system. Players such as Daniel Sedin, Sidney Crosby and Pavel Datsyuk were rated “Strong Buys”, while Alexander Ovechkin, Daniel Alfredsson and Jeff Carter were deemed a “Sell”

In addition to their charitable donations, Byron Capital Markets hosts a Charity Trade Day once a year in which all commissions earned by Byron on that day are donated to charity. Click here for more information about Byron’s commitment to social responsibility.
